50-Baht Banknote, 1st Series The issuance of the 50-Baht banknote, 1st Series was a result of substantial Thai rice export during World War I (1914-1918), thereby stimulating the demand for Thai Baht money among rice traders and commercial banks. Both were paid in pounds sterling, and this necessitated selling such foreign money to the Royal Treasury Ministry for Thai Baht. Such a high demand led to the problem of gathering Thai Baht for payment. The difficulty was further aggravated in late 1917 by the delay in delivery of banknotes caused by Thomas de la Rue & Company Limited in England, eventually leading to a severe shortage of the Thai banknotes. King Vajiravudh (Rama VI), then, at his behest, legislated an Addendum to the Royal Decree B.E. 2461 (1918) No. 3 empowering the Minister of the Royal Treasury to produce more banknotes of over 1-Baht denomination. By this means, the 1-Baht banknotes, which were printed but not yet circulated, were brought forward and their overprinted denomination of 50-Baht deemed appropriate. The 50-Baht banknote, 1st Series had two issues: Type I and Type II. The Type I was corrected: and its denomination increased to 50-Baht using the Thai numeral “๕๐” in red ink in the inside frame on both left and right hand sides was issued according to the Royal Treasury Minister Announcement dated 10 January 1918. The Arabic numeral “50” was printed in the circle in the mid-low position of the banknote. The alphabetical code and the denomination were corrected and printed as follows: “This banknote is in the alphabetical code and prefix number Z50 (ฮ๕๐)” and “The denomination is 50 Baht”. The signature of H.R.H. Prince Kitiyakara Voralaksana, the Minister of the Royal Treasury, was placed above the word “Minister of the Royal Treasury”. The date of surcharge was printed in the area which bore the signature of the official of the Royal Treasury Ministry. The legends “ONE TICAL” and “หนึ่งบาท" in the denomination windows at the centre of the banknote were crossed out with double parallel lines in black ink. The legend “The Official” was crossed out with a single line in black ink. The numeral “๑” and “1” in both Thai and Arabic in the circles at the 4 corners of the banknote was overprinted by black circles. The Type II was circulated on 2 March 1918. It was similar in feature and size to the Type I, but in the Type II, the circle in the lower part of the banknote was overprinted by the emblem of the embossed Airapote elephant. Because of its small number, the 50-Baht banknote, 1st Series was rare. The scarcity was caused by the fact that the Minister of Finance announced on 20 November 1946 to cancel the legal tender of such banknotes from 1 December 1946. The banknote bearers then brought these banknotes to exchange for banknotes with legal tender; accordingly these banknotes were withdrawn from economic circulation. Thus far, only three banknotes have been found. The first one belongs to the Type I issue and its serial number is Z50 23382, which is presently under the ownership of the Banknote Management Group. The other two banknotes remaining are both of the Type II issue of which, the serial number of the first one is Z50 73844 and this banknote belongs to a collector. The second one is Z51 77286 and it belongs to BOT Museum.
